Animal roleplay
Animal roleplay is a form of role-playing game where participants adopt the roles of non-human animals. This can include both physical and non-physical elements, and can be either a recreational activity or a part of a spiritual ritual.
Types of Animal Roleplay
There are several different types of animal roleplay, including:
- Pet play: This is where one person acts like a pet, such as a dog or cat, and another person acts as the owner. The pet may wear costumes or accessories to enhance the roleplay.
- Therianthropy: This is a spiritual belief that a person has a connection with a non-human animal, often a specific species. The person may roleplay as this animal as a way to explore this connection.
- Furry fandom: This is a subculture interested in anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Roleplay within this fandom can involve creating and acting out scenarios with these characters.
- Otherkin: This is a subculture who socially and spiritually identify as not entirely human. Some otherkin believe that they are, in part, non-human animals and may engage in animal roleplay as a way to express this.
Psychological Aspects
Animal roleplay can have various psychological aspects. It can be a form of escapism, allowing participants to explore different identities and experiences. It can also be a way to express parts of one's identity that may not be socially acceptable to express otherwise. For some, it can be a way to explore power dynamics, through roles such as pet and owner.
In Popular Culture
Animal roleplay has been depicted in various forms of media, including films, television shows, and books. It is often used as a form of humor, but can also be portrayed in a more serious or dramatic context.
