Anagen (pronounced: /ˈænədʒən/) is the active growth phase of the hair follicles during which the root of the hair is dividing rapidly, adding to the hair shaft. The term is derived from the Greek words 'ana' meaning 'up' and 'gen' meaning 'produce'.

During the anagen phase, the hair follicle penetrates deep into the dermis of the skin and the hair grows about one centimeter every 28 days. The duration of this phase varies from two to seven years, depending on genetic factors and the individual's age, health, and other individual factors.

The anagen phase is followed by the catagen phase, a short transition period that lasts about two to three weeks, and the telogen phase, the resting phase of the hair follicle.
