American Public Health Association

The American Public Health Association (APHA) is a professional organization for public health professionals in the world. It is pronounced as /əˈmɛrɪkən ˈpʌblɪk hɛlθ əˈsoʊsiˈeɪʃən/. The etymology of the term is derived from the English language, where "American" refers to something of, from, or related to the United States of America, "Public Health" refers to the health of the population as a whole, and "Association" refers to a group of people organized for a joint purpose.

The APHA was founded in 1872 at a time when scientific advances were helping to reveal the causes of communicable diseases. It is concerned with a broad set of issues affecting personal and environmental health, including federal and state funding for health programs, pollution control, programs and policies related to chronic and infectious diseases, a smoke-free society, and professional education in public health.

The APHA publishes the American Journal of Public Health and The Nation's Health, both of which are peer-reviewed. The APHA also has created a series of guides to inform and help public health professionals use these tools in their practice.
