American Geriatrics Society
American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is a not-for-profit organization of over 6,000 health professionals devoted to improving the health, independence, and quality of life of all older people. The Society provides leadership to healthcare professionals, policy makers, and the public by implementing and advocating for programs in patient care, research, professional and public education, and public policy.
History
The American Geriatrics Society was founded in 1942 to address the needs of America's growing elderly population. The Society has been instrumental in the development of geriatric medicine as a recognized medical specialty.
Mission
The mission of the AGS is to improve the health, independence, and quality of life of all older people. This is achieved through various initiatives, including the promotion of high-quality, patient-centered care for older adults and their caregivers; the advancement of geriatrics knowledge and skills through education and training; and the support of research that improves the health and well-being of older adults.
Activities
The AGS conducts a wide range of activities to fulfill its mission. These include the publication of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, which disseminates research findings and clinical experience related to geriatrics; the development of clinical practice guidelines for the care of older adults; and the organization of the annual Scientific Meeting, which provides a forum for the presentation of research and the exchange of ideas among geriatrics professionals.
Membership
Membership in the AGS is open to all health professionals committed to improving the health and well-being of older adults. Members include physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and other professionals involved in the care of the elderly.
