America the Beautiful quarters
America the Beautiful Quarters
The America the Beautiful Quarters program was a coin series issued by the United States Mint. The program began in 2010 and concluded in 2021, featuring designs that depict national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories.
History
The America the Beautiful Quarters program was authorized by the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. The act was signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 23, 2008. The program was intended to honor national parks and other national sites across the United States and its territories.
Design
Each quarter in the series features a unique design on the reverse side, representing a national park or site from each state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories. The obverse side of the quarters retains the portrait of George Washington, which has been used on the quarter since 1932, with some modifications.
Selection Process
The designs for the quarters were selected through a collaborative process involving the United States Mint, the National Park Service, and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. Each design was intended to capture the essence of the site it represents.
Release Schedule
The quarters were released in the order in which the sites were first established as national parks or sites. Five new designs were released each year from 2010 to 2021, for a total of 56 different designs.
List of Quarters
Some notable quarters in the series include:
- Hot Springs National Park (Arkansas)
- Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming)
- Yosemite National Park (California)
- Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona)
- Mount Rushmore National Memorial (South Dakota)
Collecting
The America the Beautiful Quarters have become popular among coin collectors. The United States Mint offered the quarters in various formats, including uncirculated coins, proof coins, and silver proof coins. Collectors could also purchase special sets and albums to display their collections.
