The Alveolar Process (pronunciation: al-vee-uh-lur proh-ses) is a vital part of the jawbone where the teeth are anchored. It is a ridge that contains the sockets (alveoli) of the teeth.
Etymology
The term "Alveolar" is derived from the Latin word "alveolus" meaning "small cavity" and "process" from the Latin "processus" meaning "projection". The term thus refers to the bony projections in the jaw that contain small cavities for the teeth.
Anatomy
The alveolar process exists in both the maxilla (upper jaw) and the mandible (lower jaw). It is divided into two parts: the alveolar bone proper, which lines the tooth socket and holds the tooth in place, and the supporting alveolar bone, which supports the alveolar bone proper.
