Etymology

The name "Allina" comes from the Latin word "alere," which means "to nourish." The name was chosen to reflect the organization's commitment to nurturing the health and well-being of the communities it serves.

History

Allina Health was formed in 1993 through the merger of two major Twin Cities-based health organizations, HealthSpan and Medica. The goal of the merger was to create a comprehensive, integrated healthcare system that could better serve the needs of the community.
