Alicante
Alicante (Valencian: Alacant) is a city and port in Spain on the Costa Blanca, the capital of the province of Alicante and of the comarca of Alacantí, in the south of the Valencian Community. It is also a historic Mediterranean port.
History
The area around Alicante has been inhabited for over 7000 years. The earliest tribes were attracted by the mild climate, fertile land, and the strategic location. The Carthaginians and Romans established trading colonies in the area. The city was founded by the Romans as Lucentum. During the Middle Ages, Alicante was conquered by the Moors and later by the Crown of Aragon.
Geography
Alicante is located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Mediterranean Basin. The city is situated on the coast, with the Mediterranean Sea to the east. The Mount Benacantil, a rocky hill overlooking the city, is a prominent feature of the landscape.
Climate
Alicante has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. The average annual temperature is around 18°C (64°F). The city enjoys more than 2,800 hours of sunshine per year.

The economy of Alicante is based on tourism, services, and commerce. The city is a popular destination for tourists, especially from Northern Europe. The port of Alicante is one of the most important in Spain, handling both commercial and passenger traffic.

Alicante is known for its vibrant cultural scene. The city hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the famous Hogueras de San Juan in June. The Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante (MACA) are notable cultural institutions.

Alicante is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The Alicante–Elche Airport is one of the busiest airports in Spain. The city is also served by a network of buses and trams operated by TRAM Metropolitano de Alicante.

Alicante has a strong sporting tradition. The city is home to several sports clubs, including the Hércules CF football club. The Volvo Ocean Race, a prestigious sailing event, has its headquarters in Alicante.
