Albany Medical Center Prize
Albany Medical Center Prize is a prestigious award given annually by the Albany Medical Center to honor scientists whose work has demonstrated significant outcomes in the field of medicine and biomedical research. The prize was established in 2000 and is one of the largest prizes in medicine and science in the United States.
History
The Albany Medical Center Prize was established in 2000 by the late Morris "Marty" Silverman, a New York City businessman and philanthropist. The prize is funded by a $50 million gift commitment from the Marty and Dorothy Silverman Foundation.
Selection Process
The Albany Medical Center Prize is awarded annually to a physician, biomedical researcher, or group of physicians or researchers who, through their work or contributions, have improved patient care or provided significant insight into methods of disease prevention.
The selection process for the Albany Medical Center Prize is rigorous. A national committee of over 100 top medical professionals and scientists review nominations and select the recipient(s).
Notable Recipients
Over the years, the Albany Medical Center Prize has been awarded to numerous notable scientists and physicians. Some of these include James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman, and Thomas C. Südhof, who were awarded the 2013 Albany Medical Center Prize for their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in cells. They went on to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine later that same year.
Impact
The Albany Medical Center Prize not only recognizes significant contributions to the medical and scientific community, but also inspires other researchers and physicians to strive for similar achievements. The prize has been instrumental in highlighting the importance of biomedical research in improving patient care and disease prevention.
