Agribusiness

Agribusiness (pronunciation: /ˈaɡrɪˌbɪznɪs/) is the business of agricultural production. It includes agrichemicals, breeding, crop production (farming and contract farming), distribution, farm machinery, processing, and seed supply, as well as marketing and retail sales. All agents of the food and fiber value chain and those institutions that influence it are part of the agribusiness system.

Etymology

The term "agribusiness" was coined in 1957 by John Davis and Ray Goldberg of Harvard University. It derives from the words "agriculture" and "business" and refers to the various businesses involved in food production, including farming and contract farming, seed supply, agrichemicals, farm machinery, wholesale and distribution, processing, marketing, and retail sales.
