Afro

Afro is a term that refers to the natural texture of Black African hair that has not been altered by hot combs, flat irons, or chemicals (through perming, relaxation, or straightening). The term is also used to refer to a hairstyle that mirrors such a texture. The hairstyle is created by combing the hair away from the scalp, allowing the hair to extend out from the head in a large, rounded shape, much like a halo, cloud or ball.

History

The Afro hairstyle developed as an affirmation of Black African heritage, expressed by the phrase "black is beautiful." While the Afro was a symbol of political and social rebellion in the 1960s and 1970s in the United States, it is now a representation of individuality and identity for some people of African descent.

Maintenance

Maintaining an Afro requires proper hair care to prevent breakage. This includes regular washing, conditioning, and moisturizing. The use of natural hair products is often recommended.

Cultural Significance

The Afro has been an important symbol of black identity and the fight against racial discrimination. It has also been a source of cultural pride and a rejection of Eurocentric standards of beauty.
