Affluenza
Affluenza (pronounced: /æflʊˈɛnzə/) is a term derived from the words "affluence" and "influenza". It is a social condition that arises from the desire to be more wealthy or successful. It can also refer to an inability to understand the consequences of one's actions because of financial privilege.
Etymology
The term "Affluenza" is a portmanteau of "affluence" and "influenza". It was first used in 1954 but gained popularity in the late 1990s after the PBS documentary "Affluenza".
Definition
Affluenza is not recognized as a medical condition by the American Psychiatric Association. It is often used in popular culture to refer to an unhealthy relationship with wealth. Symptoms may include a lack of motivation, feelings of guilt, and a sense of entitlement.
