Adenohypophysis (pronunciation: /ˌædɪnoʊhaɪˈpɒfɪsɪs/) is a part of the pituitary gland, also known as the anterior pituitary. It is an important organ in the endocrine system that produces and releases a variety of hormones that regulate many bodily functions.

Etymology

The term "adenohypophysis" comes from the Greek words "aden" meaning gland, and "hypophysis" meaning growth or to grow under. This refers to the gland's role in stimulating growth and development in the body.

Function

The adenohypophysis produces and secretes several hormones, including growth hormone (GH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and prolactin (PRL). These hormones play crucial roles in regulating growth, metabolism, stress response, and reproductive processes.

Structure

The adenohypophysis is composed of glandular tissue and is divided into three regions: the pars distalis, the most anterior and largest portion; the pars tuberalis, a small region wrapping around the pituitary stalk; and the pars intermedia, a thin layer sandwiched between the pars distalis and the neurohypophysis (posterior pituitary).

Related Terms

  • Pituitary gland: The master gland of the body, of which the adenohypophysis is a part.
  • Neurohypophysis: The posterior part of the pituitary gland, which stores and releases hormones produced in the hypothalamus.
  • Hypothalamus: A region of the brain that controls the pituitary gland and regulates many bodily functions.
  • Hormone: A chemical messenger produced by glands in the endocrine system, including the adenohypophysis.
