active monitoring - (pronounced) (A-tive MAH-nih-ter-ing) treatment plan in which a patient's condition is closely monitored, but no treatment is given unless there are changes in test results that show the condition is worsening. Active surveillance can be used to avoid or delay the need for treatments, such as radiation therapy or surgery, which can cause side effects or other problems. During active surveillance, certain examinations and tests are carried out on a regular basis. It can be used in the treatment of certain types of cancer such as prostate cancer, urethral cancer and intraocular (eye) melanoma. Active monitoring is a form of wait-and-see management.
