Acetone peroxide
Acetone peroxide
Acetone peroxide is an organic peroxide and a primary high explosive. It is known for its instability and sensitivity to heat, friction, and shock. Acetone peroxide is often encountered in the form of a white crystalline powder.
Chemical structure
Acetone peroxide is a cyclic organic peroxide with the chemical formula C_H__O_. It is typically found in the form of a trimer, known as triacetone triperoxide (TATP), although dimeric and tetrameric forms can also exist. The trimer is the most common and stable form.
Synthesis
Acetone peroxide is synthesized by the acid-catalyzed reaction of acetone with hydrogen peroxide. The reaction is typically carried out in an acidic medium, such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The process involves the formation of a cyclic trimer, which precipitates out of the solution as a white crystalline solid.
Properties
Acetone peroxide is highly sensitive to mechanical shock, friction, and heat, making it a dangerous explosive. It has a relatively low detonation velocity compared to other explosives, but its ease of synthesis and availability of precursors make it a compound of interest in various contexts.
Uses
Due to its instability, acetone peroxide is not used in commercial applications. However, it has been used in improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and is of concern in the context of terrorism. Its detection and handling require specialized techniques and precautions.
Safety and handling
Handling acetone peroxide requires extreme caution due to its sensitivity. It should be stored in a cool, dry place and handled with non-sparking tools. Protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, should be worn to prevent contact with the skin and eyes.
