absolute risk - (pronounced) (AB Soh Loot Risk) measure of the risk that a specific event will occur. In cancer research, absolute risk is the probability that a person who is free of a certain type of cancer at a certain age will develop that type of cancer over a certain period of time. For example, a 35-year-old woman with no known risk factors for breast cancer has an absolute risk of developing breast cancer over a lifetime of 90 years of about 13%, meaning she has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer. It also means that the chance that she will never get breast cancer is about 87% or 7 in 8
