Abiotic (pronunciation: /ˌeɪ.baɪˈɒt.ɪk/) refers to non-living chemical and physical parts of the environment that affect living organisms and the functioning of ecosystems. The term is derived from the prefix 'a-' meaning 'not, without' and the Greek word 'bios' meaning 'life'.
