Abington Township is a township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is one of the oldest communities in Montgomery County, dating back to the 1700s. The township is a suburb of Philadelphia and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
History
Abington Township was incorporated in 1906, although its history dates back to the 1700s. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before European settlers arrived. The township has a rich history, with several historic sites and buildings, including the Abington Presbyterian Church, which was established in 1714.
Geography
Abington Township is located in southeastern Pennsylvania, approximately 12 miles north of Philadelphia. It covers a total area of 15.5 square miles, of which 15.4 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The township is bordered by several other communities, including Cheltenham Township, Upper Dublin Township, and Jenkintown.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, Abington Township had a population of 58,626. The township is a diverse community with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. It is known for its excellent public schools, parks, and recreational facilities.
