AK-47
The AK-47 (pronounced: /ˌeɪkeɪˈfɔːrtiːˈsɛvən/), officially known as the Avtomat Kalashnikova (Russian: Автома́т Кала́шникова, lit. 'Kalashnikov's automatic device'), is a gas-operated, 7.62×39mm assault rifle, developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. It is the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov rifle (or "AK") family.
Etymology
The term AK-47 is derived from the Russian words "Avtomat Kalashnikova", named after its designer, Mikhail Kalashnikov, and the year it was designed, 1947. "Avtomat" translates to "automatic", referring to the automatic firing capability of the weapon, while "Kalashnikova" is the possessive form of Kalashnikov's last name.
