Background
In the early 1960s, the NFL was the dominant professional football league in the United States. The Merger Agreement
In 1966, the two leagues reached an agreement to merge. Implementation

The Super Bowl, which had been established in 1967 as a championship game between the two leagues, became the annual championship game of the unified NFL.
