A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1 September 1896 – 14 November 1977), born Abhay Charan De, was an Indian spiritual teacher and the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement. Prabhupada is regarded by his followers as a Guru and spiritual master who has opened the doors of the ancient Vedic spirituality to the modern world.

Early Life[edit]
Abhay Charan De was born in Kolkata, India, in a Bengali Hindu family. From a young age, he showed an interest in the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the Vedic scriptures. In 1922, Prabhupada met his spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, who was a prominent religious scholar and the founder of the Gaudiya Math. He instructed Abhay to spread the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the English-speaking world.
Mission and ISKCON[edit]
In 1965, at the age of 69, Prabhupada traveled to the United States with the mission of spreading Krishna consciousness. In July 1966, he founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in New York City. Prabhupada's teachings focused on the Bhagavad Gita and other ancient Indian scriptures, which he translated and commented upon extensively. He emphasized the importance of bhakti yoga (devotional service) as a means to achieve spiritual realization and God-consciousness.
Literary Contributions[edit]
Prabhupada's literary works include translations and commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, and Chaitanya Charitamrita, among others. His books have been translated into numerous languages, making the teachings of Krishna consciousness accessible to a global audience. His most notable work, Bhagavad Gita As It Is, has been particularly influential in spreading the principles of Krishna consciousness worldwide.
Legacy[edit]
Prabhupada's impact on global spirituality and religion is profound. Through ISKCON, he established a worldwide network of temples, farm communities, and educational institutions. His teachings continue to inspire millions of followers around the world to live a life of devotion, service, and spiritual advancement. Prabhupada's disciples and followers have played a significant role in continuing his mission and spreading the message of Krishna consciousness to new generations.
