40S ribosomal protein S4, Y isoform 2

From WikiMD's Food & Medicine Encyclopedia

40S ribosomal protein S4, Y isoform 2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the RPS4Y2 gene. This protein is a component of the 40S subunit of the ribosome, which is involved in protein synthesis.

Function[edit]

The 40S ribosomal protein S4, Y isoform 2 is one of the proteins that make up the small ribosomal subunit. It plays a crucial role in the initiation of protein translation, as it binds to the mRNA and helps to position it correctly on the ribosome. This protein is also involved in the process of ribosome biogenesis, which is the assembly of the ribosome from its protein and RNA components.

Structure[edit]

The 40S ribosomal protein S4, Y isoform 2 is a ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit of the ribosome. It has a molecular weight of approximately 30 kDa and is composed of 263 amino acids. The protein has a complex three-dimensional structure that allows it to interact with other components of the ribosome and the mRNA.

Clinical significance[edit]

Mutations in the RPS4Y2 gene that encodes the 40S ribosomal protein S4, Y isoform 2 can lead to diseases such as Diamond-Blackfan anemia, a rare genetic disorder that affects the bone marrow and results in decreased production of red blood cells.
