2-Methyl-2-butene, also known as 2-methylbut-2-ene, is an alkene with the chemical formula C5H10. It is one of the isomers of pentene.

Structure and properties

2-Methyl-2-butene is a branched alkene with a double bond between the second and third carbon atoms in the chain. The presence of the double bond classifies it as an unsaturated hydrocarbon. The molecule has a molecular geometry that is planar around the double bond, with a bond angle of approximately 120 degrees.

The compound is a colorless liquid at room temperature and has a characteristic hydrocarbon odor. It is less dense than water and is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.

Synthesis

2-Methyl-2-butene can be synthesized through the dehydration of tert-pentyl alcohol (2-methyl-2-butanol) using an acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid. This process involves the removal of a water molecule from the alcohol, resulting in the formation of the alkene.

Reactions

As an alkene, 2-Methyl-2-butene undergoes typical reactions of alkenes, including:

Uses

2-Methyl-2-butene is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. It is also used in the production of fuel additives and antioxidants.

Safety

2-Methyl-2-butene is flammable and should be handled with care. It can form explosive mixtures with air and should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition.
