1GOAL Education for All
1GOAL: Education for All is a global campaign initiated with the aim of ensuring that every child across the world has the opportunity to go to school and receive a quality education. The campaign was launched in 2010, aligning with the FIFA World Cup held in South Africa, leveraging the global spotlight on the event to raise awareness and support for education worldwide. 1GOAL is a part of the broader Education for All movement, which is a global commitment led by UNESCO to provide quality basic education for all children, youth, and adults.
Background
The Education for All movement was launched in Jomtien, Thailand, in 1990, and was later reaffirmed in Dakar, Senegal, in 2000. Its goals focus on expanding early childhood care, providing free and compulsory primary education, promoting learning and life skills for young people and adults, increasing adult literacy, achieving gender parity, and improving the quality of education. 1GOAL specifically focuses on the aspect of providing free and compulsory primary education for all children.
Objectives
The primary objective of 1GOAL is to ensure that every child in the world has the opportunity to receive a primary education. This involves:
- Raising global awareness about the millions of children who are currently out of school.
- Mobilizing public support and political will to take action on education issues.
- Encouraging governments, particularly in the most affected countries, to allocate resources and implement policies that ensure all children can go to school by 2015, a target date that was set in alignment with the Millennium Development Goals.
Campaign Activities
1GOAL has organized various activities to promote its cause, including:
- Partnering with football teams, players, and associations to spread the message during the FIFA World Cup and other major football events.
- Engaging celebrities and influential figures to act as ambassadors for the campaign.
- Coordinating with schools, communities, and organizations around the world to host events and activities that raise awareness and support for education.
Impact
While significant progress has been made since the launch of 1GOAL, challenges remain in achieving universal primary education. The campaign has contributed to increasing international attention on education issues and has mobilized resources and political commitment towards education for all. However, conflicts, poverty, and discrimination continue to hinder access to education for many children around the world.
