The 10/90 gap (pronounced "ten-ninety gap") is a term used in global health to describe the disparity in health research between developed countries and developing countries. The term refers to the statistic that only approximately 10% of worldwide expenditure on health research is devoted to problems that primarily affect the poorest 90% of the world's population.
Etymology
The term "10/90 gap" was first coined by the Global Forum for Health Research in the 1990s. The numbers 10 and 90 represent the percentage of global health research funds allocated to diseases that affect the world's poorest 90% compared to the world's richest 10%.
