Hyderabad was founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth sultan of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. It served as the capital of the Qutb Shahi kingdom until 1687 when it was annexed by the Mughal Empire. Later, it became the seat of the Nizam of Hyderabad, and remained an important princely state under British rule. In 1948, Hyderabad was integrated into the Indian Union following Operation Polo.
