Enterostomal therapist
An enterostomal therapist is a health professional trained in the care of persons with stomas, such as colostomies or urostomies.
Job duties[edit]
The enterostomal therapist is usually qualified as an RN (nurse) The typical enterostomal therapist roles may require the following:
- Utilize the nursing process to assess, develop a nursing diagnosis, develop a plan of care of patients with stoma
- Be involved in consulting with other health care providers in making recommendations for care or providing direct care to the ostomy patients
- Serve as a consultant to the physicians and/or staff nurses in regard to ostomy, or wound care
Qualifications[edit]
Required qualifications for this position include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or higher
- Must be a graduate of an accredited school with a wound ostomy and Continence Program.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse
- Board Certified in wound care
- Board Certified in ostomy care
