Vesicular glutamate transporter 1
Vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGLUT1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SLC17A7 gene. It is one of the three vesicular glutamate transporters. It is responsible for packaging glutamate into synaptic vesicles at presynaptic neuron terminals to be released into the synaptic cleft.
Function[edit]
VGLUT1 is a sodium-dependent inorganic phosphate transporter. It is responsible for the uptake of glutamate into synaptic vesicles at presynaptic nerve terminals of excitatory neural cells. VGLUT1 uses the proton gradient maintained across the synaptic vesicular membrane to carry glutamate into the vesicle.
Clinical significance[edit]
Alterations in the expression and function of VGLUT1 are associated with a variety of neurological disorders, including schizophrenia, depression, and Alzheimer's disease.
