Dignitas is a Swiss non-profit member's society providing assisted/accompanied suicide to those members of the organization who suffer from terminal illness and/or severe physical and/or mental illnesses, supported by qualified Swiss doctors independent of the organization. The organization is located in Forch, close to Zürich.

History[edit]

Dignitas was founded on 17 May 1998 by Ludwig A. Minelli, a human rights lawyer. Since its inception, Dignitas has assisted over 2,100 people to end their own lives.

Procedure[edit]

The procedure of assisted suicide provided by Dignitas is strictly regulated. The person wishing to die has to be a member of Dignitas, they need to submit a formal request including a letter explaining their wish to die and most importantly, they need to be of sound judgement, furthermore, they need to submit a medical history and a prescription for the drug causing death.

Controversies[edit]

Dignitas has been subject to controversy due to its advocacy and practice of euthanasia.
