ABHD6
ABHD6 (Alpha/Beta Hydrolase Domain Containing 6) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ABHD6 gene. This protein is part of the serine hydrolase family of enzymes, which are involved in a variety of biological processes, including lipid metabolism and inflammation.
Function[edit]
ABHD6 is a lipase that is primarily located in the mitochondria of cells. It plays a crucial role in the regulation of endocannabinoid signaling pathways by controlling the levels of 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), a major endocannabinoid. By hydrolyzing 2-AG, ABHD6 helps to regulate the duration and intensity of endocannabinoid signaling.
Clinical Significance[edit]
Research has suggested that ABHD6 may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders. Inhibition of ABHD6 has been shown to increase levels of 2-AG, which can enhance insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation. However, further research is needed to fully understand the potential therapeutic applications of targeting ABHD6.
