Arsenic pentafluoride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula AsF5. It is a colorless liquid that reacts readily with water. It is a powerful fluorinating agent.

Chemical Properties[edit]

Arsenic pentafluoride is a strong fluorinating agent, and it reacts with most metals and nonmetals to form fluoride compounds. It is highly reactive with water, producing hydrogen fluoride and arsenic pentoxide.

Physical Properties[edit]

Arsenic pentafluoride is a colorless liquid at room temperature. It has a boiling point of 53.5 °C and a melting point of -79.8 °C. It is denser than water, with a density of 2.666 g/cm3.

Preparation[edit]

Arsenic pentafluoride can be prepared by the reaction of arsenic pentachloride with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.

Uses[edit]

Arsenic pentafluoride is used as a fluorinating agent in organic synthesis. It is also used in the production of other arsenic compounds.

Safety[edit]

Arsenic pentafluoride is highly toxic and corrosive. It can cause severe burns and eye damage. It is also harmful if inhaled, swallowed, or in contact with skin.
