Caffè Americano[edit]

A typical serving of Caffè Americano

Caffè Americano, or simply Americano, is a type of coffee drink prepared by diluting an espresso with hot water, giving it a similar strength to, but different flavor from, traditionally brewed coffee. The strength of an Americano varies with the number of shots of espresso and the amount of water added.

Preparation[edit]

The preparation of a Caffè Americano involves brewing a shot of espresso and then adding hot water to it. The ratio of espresso to water can vary according to personal preference, but a common ratio is one part espresso to two parts water. This method results in a coffee that is similar in strength to drip coffee but with a distinct flavor profile due to the espresso base.

Variations[edit]

There are several variations of the Caffè Americano, including:

  • Long Black: Similar to an Americano, but the order of preparation is reversed. Hot water is added first, followed by the espresso, which preserves the crema.
  • Iced Americano: Prepared by adding cold water to espresso, often served over ice.

History[edit]

The term "Caffè Americano" is believed to have originated during World War II, when American soldiers stationed in Italy would dilute espresso with hot water to approximate the coffee they were accustomed to back home. This method of preparation became popular and was eventually adopted by coffee shops around the world.

Cultural Significance[edit]

Caffè Americano served in the Philippines

Caffè Americano is a staple in many coffee shops globally, appreciated for its simplicity and the ability to customize the strength and flavor. It is particularly popular in the United States, where it is often consumed as a morning beverage.

In some countries, such as the Philippines, the Americano is a popular choice in coffee shops, often enjoyed with local pastries or as a refreshing iced beverage in the tropical climate.
