National Doctors' Day
National Doctors' Day[edit]

National Doctors' Day is a day celebrated to recognize the contributions of physicians to individual lives and communities. The day is observed in various countries, although the date of observance varies from country to country. In the United States, National Doctors' Day is celebrated on March 30th each year.
History[edit]
The first observance of Doctors' Day was on March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia. The idea was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond. The date was chosen to commemorate the first use of general anesthesia in surgery, which was administered by Dr. Crawford W. Long on March 30, 1842.
The celebration involved sending greeting cards to physicians and placing flowers on the graves of deceased doctors. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors' Day.
Recognition in the United States[edit]
In 1990, the United States Congress passed legislation designating March 30th as National Doctors' Day. The resolution was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush, making it an official day of recognition.
Observance[edit]
National Doctors' Day is an opportunity for patients, healthcare organizations, and communities to express gratitude to doctors for their dedication and service. Celebrations may include sending cards, hosting luncheons, or organizing events to honor physicians.
International Observance[edit]
While the United States observes National Doctors' Day on March 30th, other countries have their own dates and traditions for honoring doctors. For example, in India, Doctors' Day is celebrated on July 1st in memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned physician and former Chief Minister of West Bengal.
Significance[edit]
National Doctors' Day serves as a reminder of the critical role that physicians play in society. It highlights the commitment of doctors to improving health outcomes and advancing medical knowledge. The day also acknowledges the challenges and sacrifices faced by doctors in their profession.
