After completing his medical degree, Breithardt continued his training in internal medicine and cardiology, focusing on the emerging field of cardiac electrophysiology.
Career[edit]
Breithardt's career in cardiology began at the University of Düsseldorf, where he worked as a research assistant. His early research focused on the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias, which laid the foundation for his future work in the field. In 1980, he was appointed as a professor of internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Münster, where he established a leading center for cardiac electrophysiology.

Throughout his career, Breithardt has been involved in numerous clinical trials and research projects aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias. He has published extensively in scientific journals and has been a prominent figure in the development of guidelines for the management of atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias.
Contributions to Cardiology[edit]
Breithardt is particularly noted for his work on the pathophysiology and treatment of atrial fibrillation, a common and complex cardiac arrhythmia. He has contributed to the understanding of the electrical and structural changes in the heart that lead to atrial fibrillation and has been involved in the development of catheter ablation techniques to treat this condition.
In addition to his research, Breithardt has been an influential educator, mentoring many young cardiologists and electrophysiologists. His work has had a lasting impact on the field, influencing both clinical practice and research directions.
Professional Affiliations[edit]
Breithardt has been actively involved in several professional organizations. He has served as the president of the European Society of Cardiology and has been a member of various committees and task forces dedicated to advancing cardiovascular medicine.
