History

Loblaw Companies was founded in 1919 by Theodore Pringle Loblaw and J. Milton Cork in Toronto, Ontario. The first store introduced the self-serve grocery model, which was revolutionary at the time. This model allowed customers to browse and select their own groceries, a departure from the traditional full-service model where clerks gathered items for customers.
