Penile Frenulectomy

A penile frenulectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal or alteration of the frenulum of the penis. The frenulum is a band of tissue located on the underside of the penis, connecting the glans to the shaft. This procedure is typically performed to address issues such as frenulum breve, which can cause discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse or erection.

Indications

Penile frenulectomy is indicated in cases where the frenulum is too short, a condition known as frenulum breve. This can lead to painful erections, tearing of the frenulum, or difficulty retracting the foreskin over the glans. It may also be performed as part of a circumcision or to enhance sexual function and comfort.

Procedure

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision to release the frenulum, allowing for greater mobility of the foreskin. In some cases, the frenulum is completely removed. The incision is then closed with absorbable sutures. The entire procedure typically takes less than an hour.

Recovery

Recovery from a penile frenulectomy is generally quick. Patients are advised to avoid sexual activity and strenuous physical activity for a few weeks to allow proper healing. Mild discomfort and swelling are common but usually resolve within a few days. Proper hygiene is important to prevent infection.

Complications

Complications from penile frenulectomy are rare but can include bleeding, infection, or scarring. In some cases, there may be a change in sensation, although this is uncommon. Patients are advised to follow post-operative care instructions to minimize risks.
