Rhineland-Palatinate

Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz in German) is one of the 16 federal states of Germany, located in the western part of the country. It shares borders with the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and Baden-Württemberg, as well as with France, Luxembourg, and Belgium. The state capital is Mainz.

History

Rhineland-Palatinate was established on 30 August 1946, after World War II, by the French military government. It was formed from the southern part of the Prussian Rhine Province, parts of the People's State of Hesse, and parts of Bavaria's Rhenish Palatinate.
