Saul
Saul was the first king of the Kingdom of Israel and Judah. His reign, traditionally placed in the late 11th century BCE, marked a transition from a tribal society to statehood.
Early life[edit]
Saul was a member of the tribe of Benjamin, one of the smallest of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Saul was chosen to lead the Israelites against their enemies, but when Samuel anointed him in secret, he responded with modesty, if not outright disbelief.
Reign[edit]
Saul's reign over Israel was marked by battles against many enemies. Saul was continually at war with the Philistines, the Amalekites, and the Moabites. Saul showed great military skill in these battles, but his disobedience to God led to his downfall.
Death[edit]
Saul died in the battle of Mount Gilboa, and his body was desecrated by the Philistines, but later retrieved by the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead, who buried him and his three sons who had also died in the battle.
Legacy[edit]
Saul's life and reign are described in the Hebrew Bible's First Book of Samuel. According to the Tanakh, Saul was anointed by Samuel and reigned for two years before David was anointed king. However, his disobedience to God led to his downfall and death.
