Methyl isobutyl ketone

Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is an organic compound with the formula (CH₃)₂CHCH₂C(O)CH₃. It is a colorless liquid, widely used as a solvent in industrial applications. MIBK is a member of the ketone family, characterized by the presence of a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to two hydrocarbon groups.
Chemical Properties[edit]
Methyl isobutyl ketone is a ketone with a molecular weight of 100.16 g/mol. It has a boiling point of 116 °C and a melting point of -84 °C. MIBK is slightly soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents, such as ethanol, ether, and benzene.
Production[edit]

MIBK is produced by the acetone condensation process, which involves the reaction of acetone with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. This process yields diacetone alcohol, which is then dehydrated to form mesityl oxide. The mesityl oxide is subsequently hydrogenated to produce MIBK.
Applications[edit]
Methyl isobutyl ketone is primarily used as a solvent in the production of paints, varnishes, lacquers, and adhesives. It is also used in the extraction of copper and other metals from ores. Additionally, MIBK serves as a precursor in the synthesis of rubber chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Health and Safety[edit]
MIBK is considered to be a relatively low-toxicity solvent, but exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Prolonged exposure may lead to central nervous system effects. It is important to handle MIBK with appropriate safety measures, including the use of personal protective equipment and adequate ventilation.
Environmental Impact[edit]
Methyl isobutyl ketone is classified as a volatile organic compound (VOC) and can contribute to air pollution. It is important to manage emissions of MIBK to minimize its environmental impact. Proper disposal and recycling practices should be followed to reduce its release into the environment.
