Pharmacy (shop)
Pharmacy (shop)
A pharmacy (also known as a chemist in Commonwealth countries, or a drugstore in North America) is a retail shop where medicines are sold. This is distinct from a pharmacy as a place where pharmaceutical sciences are practiced.
History[edit]
The history of pharmacies as retail establishments selling medicines can be traced back to ancient times. The first known drugstore was opened by Arabian pharmacists in Baghdad in 754 AD. In the Middle Ages, pharmacies in Europe were often opened in the premises of a monastery.
Services[edit]
Pharmacies offer a range of services to their customers. These include dispensing prescription medicines, selling over-the-counter medicines, providing advice on health issues, and sometimes offering additional services such as health checks and vaccinations.
Regulation[edit]
Pharmacies are regulated by various laws and regulations, depending on the country. These regulations often require that pharmacies be owned and operated by pharmacists, and that they comply with certain standards for the storage and dispensing of medicines.
