Gustav Killian

Gustav Killian (1860-1921) was a German laryngologist who is best known for his work in bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy. He was born on June 2, 1860, in Mainz, Germany, and died on February 24, 1921, in Berlin.

Early Life and Education

Gustav Killian was born in Mainz, Germany, in 1860. He studied medicine at the University of Freiburg and graduated in 1884. After his graduation, he worked as an assistant at the University Hospital in Freiburg.

Career

In 1895, Killian was appointed as the head of the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) department at the University of Berlin. He held this position until his death in 1921. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the field of laryngology, particularly in the areas of bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy.

Contributions to Medicine

Killian is considered the father of bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy. He developed the technique of direct laryngoscopy, which allowed for the examination of the larynx and the bronchi. This technique revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the respiratory tract.

In addition to his work in bronchoscopy, Killian also made significant contributions to the field of rhinology. He developed a new technique for the removal of nasal polyps, which is still used today.
