Salome Karwah
Salome Karwah (1985 – February 21, 2017) was a Liberian nurse and Ebola survivor who used her immunity to treat others with the disease. She was named a Time Person of the Year in 2014 for her efforts during the Ebola virus epidemic in Liberia.
Early life[edit]
Karwah was born in 1985 in Liberia. She lost both her parents to the Ebola virus and was herself infected but survived, gaining immunity to the disease.
Career[edit]
After surviving Ebola, Karwah decided to use her immunity to help others suffering from the disease. She worked as a nurse in an Ebola treatment unit in Liberia, where she provided care to patients without the need for protective clothing. Her work was instrumental in saving many lives during the epidemic.
In 2014, Karwah was named a Time Person of the Year, along with other health workers fighting Ebola. The magazine highlighted her bravery and dedication to helping others despite the personal risks involved.
Death[edit]
Karwah died on February 21, 2017, following complications from childbirth. Her death highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the Liberian healthcare system in the aftermath of the Ebola epidemic.
Legacy[edit]
Karwah's work during the Ebola epidemic has been widely recognized for its impact on the fight against the disease. Her story has been used to highlight the importance of local health workers in responding to health crises and the need for improved healthcare systems in countries like Liberia.
