Abruzzo is a region in central Italy, bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east, the region of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and southwest, and Molise to the southeast. The region is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from the mountainous Apennines to the coastal areas along the Adriatic.

Geography[edit]

Abruzzo is characterized by its mountainous terrain, with the Gran Sasso d'Italia being the highest peak in the Apennines. The region is divided into four provinces: L'Aquila, Teramo, Pescara, and Chieti. The Corno Grande, part of the Gran Sasso massif, is a notable feature of the region's geography.

The history of Abruzzo dates back to prehistoric times, with evidence of human habitation during the Lower Paleolithic period.

During the Roman era, Abruzzo was an important region, with significant settlements such as Amiternum.

In the Middle Ages, Abruzzo was part of the Kingdom of Sicily and later the Kingdom of Naples. The region has a rich architectural heritage, including the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L'Aquila.
