Greenpeace

Greenpeace is a non-governmental environmental organization with offices in over 39 countries and an international coordinating body in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Greenpeace was founded by Irving Stowe and Dorothy Stowe, Canadian and US ex-pat environmental activists in 1971. Greenpeace states its goal is to "ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity" and focuses its campaigning on worldwide issues such as climate change, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, genetic engineering, and anti-nuclear issues.

History

Greenpeace was first started in the 1970s as a small group of activists protesting against nuclear testing. Over the years, the organization has grown to become one of the largest and most influential environmental groups in the world. Greenpeace is known for its direct actions and has been described as the most visible environmental organization worldwide.

Campaigns

Greenpeace conducts research into and lobbies for changes in public policy in areas such as climate change, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, genetic engineering, and anti-nuclear issues. It also uses direct action to draw attention to these issues and to bring about changes.

Criticism

While Greenpeace has been praised for its efforts to protect the environment, it has also been criticized for its tactics and its views on certain issues. Some critics argue that Greenpeace is too radical and that it does not always base its campaigns on sound science.
