Vegetarian Society
The Vegetarian Society is a British charity that promotes vegetarianism. It was established in 1847 and is considered one of the oldest vegetarian organizations in the world. The Vegetarian Society was founded on 30 September 1847 at Northwood Villa in Ramsgate, Kent. The meeting was organized by the Bible Christian Church, a group that advocated for a meat-free diet. The society was formed by the merger of the Bible Christian Church and the Alcott House community, both of which promoted vegetarianism.
The society's first president was James Simpson, and its early members included notable figures such as William Horsell and Joseph Brotherton. The society's headquarters moved several times, eventually settling in Altrincham.
