McDonald's Israel
McDonald's Israel is the Israeli branch of the international fast food chain, McDonald's. Established in 1993, it is managed by Alonyal Limited, a company owned by Omri Padan. McDonald's Israel is notable for its adaptation to local tastes and dietary laws, and for being the first McDonald's branch to fully implement a bar code system for improved service.
History[edit]
McDonald's entered the Israeli market on October 14, 1993, with its first branch located in Ramat Gan. The franchise was awarded to Omri Padan, one of the founders of the Peace Now movement. As of 2020, McDonald's Israel operates over 180 restaurants across the country.
Menu[edit]
The menu at McDonald's Israel is similar to other McDonald's outlets worldwide, but it also includes items tailored to local tastes. For example, it offers the "McFalafel," a falafel sandwich, and the "Big America," a burger with toppings inspired by American cuisine. All meat served at McDonald's Israel is kosher, and the restaurants do not operate on Shabbat and Jewish holidays.
Controversies[edit]
McDonald's Israel has faced several controversies. In 2004, it was criticized for its high prices compared to other McDonald's branches worldwide. In 2013, it refused to open a branch in the Ariel settlement, leading to accusations of political bias.
