Supraorbital nerve
Supraorbital nerve is a nerve that emerges at the forehead, and is a branch of the frontal nerve. It provides sensory innervation to parts of the forehead and scalp.
Etymology[edit]
The term "supraorbital" is derived from the Latin words "supra" meaning "above" and "orbis" meaning "circle". This refers to the nerve's position above the orbit of the eye.
Anatomy[edit]
The supraorbital nerve is a branch of the frontal nerve, which is itself a branch of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. It passes through the supraorbital foramen or supraorbital notch, and divides into a superficial and a deep branch. The superficial branch provides sensory innervation to the forehead and scalp, while the deep branch provides sensory innervation to the upper eyelid and the conjunctiva of the eye.
Clinical significance[edit]
The supraorbital nerve can be affected in a number of medical conditions. For example, supraorbital neuralgia is a condition characterized by pain in the distribution of the supraorbital nerve. This can be caused by trauma, surgery, or inflammation. In addition, the supraorbital nerve can be involved in certain types of headaches, such as migraines and cluster headaches.
