A metabolite of arachidonic acid

20-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) is a metabolite of arachidonic acid, an important polyunsaturated fatty acid in the human body. It is produced by the action of cytochrome P450 enzymes, specifically the CYP4A and CYP4F subfamilies. 20-HETE plays a significant role in the regulation of vascular tone, renal function, and blood pressure.

Biosynthesis[edit]

20-HETE is synthesized from arachidonic acid through the action of cytochrome P450 enzymes. These enzymes hydroxylate arachidonic acid at the omega-terminus, specifically at the 20th carbon, to produce 20-HETE. The CYP4A and CYP4F subfamilies are primarily responsible for this conversion.

Physiological roles[edit]

20-HETE is involved in various physiological processes:

Pathophysiological implications[edit]

Abnormal levels of 20-HETE have been associated with various diseases and conditions:

  • Hypertension: Elevated 20-HETE levels have been linked to the development of hypertension, particularly in salt-sensitive individuals.
  • Stroke and cardiovascular diseases: Due to its role in vascular tone regulation, 20-HETE is implicated in the pathogenesis of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
  • Cancer: 20-HETE has been shown to promote tumor growth and metastasis in certain types of cancer, making it a potential target for therapeutic intervention.

Research and therapeutic potential[edit]

Research into 20-HETE is ongoing, with studies exploring its potential as a therapeutic target. Inhibitors of 20-HETE synthesis or action are being investigated for their potential to treat hypertension, stroke, and cancer.
