Fostedil is a vasodilator and antianginal medication that was developed by Janssen Pharmaceutica. It is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor and works by relaxing the blood vessels, which allows blood to flow more easily.

Pharmacology[edit]

Fostedil is a type of drug known as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Phosphodiesterase inhibitors work by blocking the action of the enzymes that break down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), two important secondary messengers in the body. By increasing the levels of cGMP and cAMP, these drugs can cause relaxation of the smooth muscle in the blood vessels, leading to vasodilation.

Clinical Use[edit]

Fostedil has been used in the treatment of angina pectoris, a condition characterized by chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart. By causing vasodilation, Fostedil can increase the amount of blood reaching the heart, thereby relieving the symptoms of angina.

Side Effects[edit]

Like all medications, Fostedil can cause side effects. These may include headache, flushing, and low blood pressure. In rare cases, it may cause serious side effects such as heart palpitations and allergic reactions.
