Lepiota clypeolaria
Lepiota clypeolaria[edit]
Lepiota clypeolaria, commonly known as the shield dapperling, is a species of fungus in the family Agaricaceae. This small, saprotrophic mushroom is found in woodland areas, often growing on the forest floor among leaf litter.
Description[edit]
The cap of Lepiota clypeolaria is typically 3–6 cm in diameter, starting as convex and becoming broadly bell-shaped with age. The surface is covered with fine, woolly scales, giving it a distinctive appearance. The color of the cap is usually a pale yellowish-brown, with a darker center.
The gills are free from the stipe and are white to cream in color. The stipe itself is slender, measuring 4–8 cm in length and 0.5–1 cm in thickness, with a fragile, ring-like annulus that often disappears with age. The base of the stipe is slightly bulbous.
The spore print of Lepiota clypeolaria is white, and the spores are smooth, ellipsoid, and measure approximately 7–10 by 4–5 micrometers.
Habitat and Distribution[edit]
Lepiota clypeolaria is widely distributed across Europe and North America. It is typically found in deciduous and mixed forests, often in association with oak, beech, and other broadleaf trees. This species prefers nutrient-rich, humus-laden soils and is often found in small groups or solitary.
Edibility[edit]
The edibility of Lepiota clypeolaria is considered suspect, and it is generally not recommended for consumption. Some members of the genus Lepiota contain toxins that can cause gastrointestinal distress, and proper identification is crucial to avoid potential poisoning.
Similar Species[edit]
Lepiota clypeolaria can be confused with other small, scaly-capped mushrooms in the genus Lepiota. It is important to note the size, cap texture, and habitat when identifying this species. Other similar species include Lepiota brunneoincarnata and Lepiota cristata, both of which are also found in similar habitats.
